Most everything that you can do with a subfile, you can accomplish using a data structure. But maybe Naveen is wanting to do subfile-type field definitions without having to do them within the RPG program (where you'd need to do include a file definition and some *LIKE stmts). Doing something like that could lead to some nice "building-block" coding - and isn't that what the ILE is all about? So, what you're suggesting is an externally defined record layout thats not part of a display... something that we can write records to, and read them from, without the need for an array. Brilliant idea! While you're at it... lets add the ability to create keyed access paths off of this new object... and the ability to sort it and run queries on it! Wouldn't that make it even more useful? Hmmmmm.... what should we call this new thing... Seriously though... I've found that there are so many different ways to store data... physical files, IFS files, user spaces, MODS's, arrays.... They're designed to do the things that you're trying to do here... So why use a subfile? Whats the advantage to a subfile, UNLESS its going to be a display?
