Is this applicable to a native date field - normally those get padded as
0001-01-01 but is it possible to have a null value?

It provides the 'correct' way of expressing the value of fields that have no
value. Like 'termination date' for a not-terminated employee in the
employee
master or 'date shipped' for an order that has not shipped. Now you fill
these with some dummy 'magic' data like all *zeros or *loval or *hival but
they really should have NO value.
