It provides the 'correct' way of expressing the value of fields that have no 
value.  Like 'termination date' for a not-terminated employee in the employee 
master or 'date shipped' for an order that has not shipped.  Now you fill 
these with some dummy 'magic' data like all *zeros or *loval or *hival but 
they really should have NO value.
