I would assume it's a size and speed advantage. When statically linked, the
compiled program does not have the extra code to read the file's fields and
doesn't need to check each field used by the program against the file's
field list to make sure it exists (equivalent to a level check), etc.

It's the same argument with bound calls vs dynamic calls. With bound calls
if a subprogram's interface (parameters) are modified, you have to recompile
all the programs that use it.
