David,

   I'm not certain what you're asking.  But, in general to validate
a pathname, use:

access() to determine if the pathname exists, and (optionally) if
you have access to do whatever your program will need to do.

if you want to create it if it doesnt exist, just use open() or
mkdir() to create it.  If open() or mkdir() fails, check errno
to determine why it failed.

If this doesn't help, maybe you can be a bit more specific as
to what you consider "a valid name", and why it wouldnt work
with multi-level directories.
