We use triggers to document certain changes to our main customer master file, Mirror changes to remote systems and finally calculate field values, (some in other files), based on the value of other fields. We used to write a module to perform these functions, but someone would create a new application that updated a few fields directly, not using our modules and fields would not be calculated correctly. Triggers solved this problem for us. Now we don't worry about new application development forgetting some of our business rules. Triggers are programs attached to a file and called by the data base manager. Then can be called before or after an insert, (add), delete or update to the file. Once written and debugged thoroughly, you can almost forget about them. Some ONE should take responsibility for the trigger program and be call the data base administrator in charge of the file that the trigger is attached to. I say this because triggers enforce business rules and if completely forgotten about, well you just forgot about your business rules... Christopher K.
