But I have always found the IBM manuals to be the best place to find
information. Other people rely on third party books, but they dont
always give you the full information. Its a question of getting used to
the way the manuals are organised I suppose.

Its not that many people are scared of the manuals. I find that in
general, like most of IBM Manuals (whether mainframe or AS/400), you
need to know what you are looking for before you know where to look.
There have been occasions I have searched through numerous IBM manuals
on the internet, (especially for API's ) only to be told that the
information Im searching for, resides in a particular manual I would
never have considered. I have even called IBM's support line asking for
directions to which manual I need to review, and on a couple of
occasions, its taken them some time to come up with an answer.

Definitely agree with you there. Many people are scared of the manuals,
for some reason?

Hmmm, I thought I did yesterday when I referred the poster to
Chapter 9 of the ILE RPG Reference manual! Can anyone program
effectively (in any language) without being intimately familiar
with the manuals? Knowing how (and when) to read a manual is
probably the most important thing a student of programming can
learn.

Cheers! Hans
