As I'm getting ready to teach RPGIV to my development team next week, I've
been thinking about this question lately. While Hans' response was a great
list, I have one more to add.

With the unfortuately large turnover in AS/400 shops, one of the things I
hope will make our shop attractive to new employees is the fact that we are
current with what IBM offers from a programming language standpoint. I
certainly would not take a position at a shop who says "We're good at
RPGIII - why learn anything new?" As I've interviewed candidates over the
past few months, I'm amazed at the number of programmers who have never
even heard of RPGIV or ILE. That, to me, is a "red flag"! I don't have
the expectation that they will all be experienced with RPGIV/ILE, but
anyone who makes any effort to keep themselves current with the market at
least knows what it is!

The developers I'm training have RPG experience ranging from 3 years to 23
years, so I recognize it will not be an easy switch. However, doing all
our new development in a common language will be a great stride. Many new
programmers fresh out of school have never heard of the RPG cycle (as it
should be!), and I certainly wouldn't want to teach them RPGII, RPGIII and
RPGIV, just so they can maintain my system!
