Martin,

Sorry to have misled you, I forgot that I wrote the RTVSPLFA command we use.  
I've been using it for over 12 years so it seems like a system object.  The 
retrieve spool file attributes API is the way to go.

If it is the last or only spool file opened with a distinct name, the spool 
number can be retrieved using the RTVSPLFA command.

Is there any way to retrieve the file number of a particular spool file
from the spool file attributes in a CL program?  This is the number
which appears on the top right of the screen when you display spool file
attributes.
