What you would normally do instead is register both names in DNS and have
them point to the same location.

I'm aware of that. The site in question is online bill pay by our bank.
The current link to get there has dilgardfoods in the url, but not
dilgardfoods.com. And it's rather lengthy, so I thought that something
like paymybill.dilgardfoods.com would be easy to remember. I assume the
site is a static IP.

But that's if you want to choose the full domain.

Suppose there's a long URL such as

www.thisisareallylongurlthatnooneeverremembersorwantsto.com

that points to IP 1.2.3.4.

Can one go out to GoDaddy (or whichever service is used) and set up a
URL such as

www.shortcuturl.com

Depends on the hosting provider.

Google domains provides that capability ... as does name.com (the two
I've worked with).

If you want to create a short name, and don't care if the name is
meaningful, you can use bit.ly.

Bitly also provides whitelabel services if you have your own short domain
(like my urlq.me or ibm.co).
