If you are doing everything before the slash, like in your example,
www.thisisareallylongurlthatnooneeverremembersorwantsto.com
then a redirect site like tinyurl.com or bitly.com come to mind.
If your shortened URL must be company specific, IOW you want something
like
www.dgfoods.com
and not
bitly.com/dgfoods
as a short method of that long url above then you might want to contact
your provider and see if they support redirects. In the Windows DNS world
we call these ALIAS records.

However if you have something like
dgfoods.com/inagoddadavidababy/means/to/tell/the/whole/world/that/I/love/you
and you want that shortned to
dgfoods.com/frozengoods
then you handle that with redirects in your apache setup.

But I really know zip about this kind of stuff.
