Dell has diagnostics that should be able to determine if the RTC battery is
kaput. Press F12 when booting to access.

That's what it sounds like to me too. Like you, I would have thought
factory replacement under warranty would be the most straightforward
option.
I asked IT support if they could give me a new unitwant
and swap in my hard drive to see if that resolves the issue. But they

What do you have to set back the way it was? What are the most painful
parts of that? And, if that's bearable (and better than putting up
with wonky Outlook reminders), the fact that your support people at
least seem willing to go this route means it might be your best
option.
