Thanks Tom.

I was told that the laptop gets an updated time from our network time
server every time we log on, so that, I think, would explain why the time
is correct when I power up or reboot.

The linked article is for pre-XP Windows versions, although I do recall
checking APM in the BIOS when I first started investigating.

That's what it sounds like to me too. Like you, I would have thought
factory replacement under warranty would be the most straightforward

What do you have to set back the way it was? What are the most painful
parts of that? And, if that's bearable (and better than putting up
with wonky Outlook reminders), the fact that your support people at
least seem willing to go this route means it might be your best
option.
