Jeff,
My youngest son will graduate next spring with a degree in Informatics.
When asked what he would like for Christmas and graduation, he replied he
wants a new laptop to replace his 4-year-old Dell.
I think the first thing you need to decide is what he needs for screen
size, graphics power, and disk space.
If he can get by with a 13.3" screen and doesn't need high end
graphics, then the new ultrabooks look very promising. They are the
Windows counterpart to the Macbook Air line. Under 3 pounds, all SSD
drive, and amazingly good battery life.
However, the graphics integrated on the i5/i7 chips is not up to par
with the graphics you can get on a larger notebook, and you are
limited to dual core instead of quad core. But it should still run
circles around a 4 year old Dell.
