Thanks to everyone. The critical thing right now is to get access to the mail box folders. We used Thunderbird here before we "upgraded" to MS Exchange. In the past I've used Eudora, and I even have a Gmail account. I've only used the Gmail account for miscellaneous stuff and never delved into the configuration so that might be an option.
My "home" PC isn't really at home but, rather, at my sister's business which has broadband (and she lets me use for free). Anyway, I won't be able to try anything until this weekend.
I tried several things suggested by MS Support, but obviously none of them worked. I checked my PC (XP SP3) here and it doesn't have an "Inbox Repair Tool" or anything that looks like it; maybe mine does, but it doesn't ring a bell.

Oops, sort of. I read when doing my quick research that the "Inbox
Repair Tool" will repair OE mailboxes, and as I understand it the tool
is installed with Windows and OE rather than with Office/Outlook.
Another alternative I have seen is to move the .dbx and .mdx files
somewhere and open OE. If OE opens after removing the mailbox files,
corruption was the problem. If it doesn't, re-install it. Then use
the import option (which can import from Outlook Express files) to
re-import the messages.
Still, I recommend going to Thunderbird or Gmail rather than putting
time into Outlook Express. Both can import the old messages easily
enough.
