If it was just a simple desktop PC, then yeah...but I'm pretty sure
I'd miss something basic, but required, and I'd be screwing around
trying to get it right long after the point that I need the
server for in the first place.

Very true, and I wouldn't make a server build your first build in any
case. I assumed (I know) that this was a desktop PC since you're looking
at running Vista/XP there too.
