Here's what I'd do in an attempt to debug:

set varDocType = MailMergeDocument.MailMerge.State
If Not varDocType = wdMainAndHeader Then
SkipDocumentPrint = True
ShowMessage FileName, ".doc is not a mailmerge document", "**"
Documents.Close (wdDoNotSaveChanges)
Exit Sub
End If


Put a break in the "If Not" section and hold your cursor over varDocType to see what the value is set to. This should set you on your way to finding a solution.
