Is spending $50 on a video card expected to handle video intensive
games
asking for trouble?

Short answer, yes! It depends on the game, but gamer cards are basically
their own computers. Then again, if what he had was good, an upgrade
will be better. :-) Looking for a gamer's card should almost be easier
than the time I had looking for a developer's card. Check out tom's
hardware (www.tomshardware.com) for reviews/info on cards. Also, you've
got to consider what his PC can handle. Must it be PCI? AGP? PCI
express, etc.
