Anyway...

I got it to work, finally, by uninstalling everything (again), disabling
the USB ports in BIOS, restarting, installing the drivers, shut down,
reenable USB in BIOS, restart, plug in the camera and, STILL didn't work
until I pulled the USB OUT of the device itself, then plugged it back into
the camera and then it worked fine.

I doubt that I needed to do ALL those steps but I'm not going to try to
repeat it just to figure out which one of those things actually worked.

I'm just happy it does.

Very frustrating but I caused the problem myself so I can't complain too
loudly.
