I made a rookie mistake today. I have a usb camera that I just got and I
was getting ready to try it out and I forgot and plugged in the USB cable
and camera BEFORE I installed the drivers! D'oh! I know better than
this!!!! I could kick myself.
I've made the same mistake and I don't think it's ever been fatal like this. Usually, deleting it from the Device manager helps. Is there another port you can plug it into? A lot of times this throws everything back into place with the demand for the drivers.

I'd re-install the software and leave it alone. Try plugging it into another port if available, otherwise try to locate the driver location on the disk and tell the driver installation program that you will specify the location of the drivers.
