Well I feel stupider than usual.
Am able to connect now. For the archives, I was thinking that I
needed to connect (TCP/IP-wise) to conference.midrange.com. That's
where I was hung up mentally.
The trick is to connect to any working jabber server and choose a room
list from conference.midrange.com
