Does anybody read this the way I do? That basically the folks in the lab created this virus and are now warning us about it?
No I don't think the Kaspersky lab created the virus. There are many hacker sites on the net where this information gets published. The AV companies monitor this information. Vulnerability disclosure is a double-edged sword; the information is typically already out there before they make a statement. Another source noted that this virus appears to work on Windows, Linux and Macintosh OSX systems equally.
