It might be something called 'Snowman' stopping you. This is an option you can invoke , that was set up to prevent Slamming( one service provider stealing your account from another). Violators are subject to high PSC & FCC penalties. Like $5000 per incidence. and more for repeat offenders. Best to discuss with a phone service provider if this is the case, you can get authorize and make changes. Phone numbers are portable and there is some sort of small type note$ on your bill for this.

This would be way cool.  And it seems logical.

I spent about 30 minutes late last night on Vonage web site.  I checked, and
it said my home phone number was _not_ available for transfer.  I wonder is
that's an error, that it's saying that because I have it?  I suppose I'll
have to talk to them and ask.

Other than that, I really couldn't come up with a reason not to try it.
Just have to convince my wife . . .
