I picked my player based on my portable.  After many other portables
(RCA Lyra, Samsung Napster), I got an iPod.  Which means iTunes
(although there are ways around it).

But I do rip all my music to VBR MP3's (just in case I get another new
toy that doesn't play AAC).  Looks like there's plenty of stuff out
there to convert Real Media to MP3:
