Robin, I picked my player based on my portable. After many other portables (RCA Lyra, Samsung Napster), I got an iPod. Which means iTunes (although there are ways around it). But I do rip all my music to VBR MP3's (just in case I get another new toy that doesn't play AAC). Looks like there's plenty of stuff out there to convert Real Media to MP3: http://www.google.com/search?q=real+media+to+mp3+converter Mike E.
