SOCKS proxy?

Folks:

Does anyone know how prevalent SOCKS proxies are in the real world?

I'm working on a project that does some FTP activities ... and the FTP
libraries I'm using support SOCKS proxies.  Should I implement direct
support for them?

On a similar note ... does anyone know of a open source or freeware
socks proxy implementation?
