I know that I didn't see any video information at boot time because I
booted a couple of times trying to catch it. I also looked around through
the BIOS settings hoping to get lucky but didn't see any clues there
either. I don't remember if I saw any motherboard info at boot time. I'll
take another look.

I was just going to suggest that. I picked up an 8X AGP GeForce4 440
with 64MB and TV out for my wife's PC for $30 a few weeks ago. I think
the brand was PNY but it really didn't matter as they most all use the
nVidia reference board design. Passively cooled so no fan to break or
make noise. Plenty fast for the intended use (surfing & watching DVDs).
There should be equivalents from ATI as well (Radeon 7000 series, IIRC)
or other brands if you dislike nVidia.
Oh yeah, it came with a working driver CD. :)
The other way to check for motherboard brand/model is to carefully watch
the screen at boot time. Before the Windows logo. Sometimes sufficient
info will be there as well.
