Adam, >How is Excel supposed to know? Guess? No, but by the presence of the double quotes around a value, even if it only contains digits. But Excel's automatic (ie non-wizard based text import) handling of CSV's treats any value as a number which can be interpretted as numeric regardless of the presence of quotes. Doug
