John, >...but if you can read court documents, it's all in there. >...let's put a bunch of hooks into the API's so that our software runs >faster and our competitors will have to use the slower hooks I have read the court documents (well, ok not all of them, but a good number) and it always amazes me that maby of the APIs that the non-MS vendors are complaining about I know about. Why do I know about them, well because I subscribe to MSDN, I read MSDN Mag (MSJ) I look at the .h files for windows in the SDK, etc. MS does actuially document a good number of their so-called "hidden" APIs and those that they don't document have been well documented (for example all the kt* kernel APIs) by third parties. If other organizations are too lazy/stupid to avail themselves of the information available about windows it's not microsoft's fault. Now I grant, MS may create new APIs that are better/faster/cheaper than earlier APIs and then use them in their applications, but there is nothing that stops a cometitor from using the API too. Sure, they may need to rewrite an entire section of code to use that API, but so did MS, it's just that MS is willing/able to spend the time and money to do the rewrite and others aren't. >We can drop all support for Java and remove the JVM from our site Actually, SUN forced that in their Java suit. MS couldn't distribute it's own JVM anymore. However, I believe you'll find that Java is supported on Windows to this day. Why should MS allow itself to be a download portal for Sun? Do you expect CNN to provide links to MSNBC? Perhaps you feel that if I search BurgerKing's site for a BigMac their site should say, "oh, that McDonalds burger, click here." -Walden ------------ Walden H Leverich III President Tech Software (516) 627-3800 x11 (208) 692-3308 eFax WaldenL@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.TechSoftInc.com Quiquid latine dictum sit altum viditur. "our extra fast product"... no... too long... how about XP?... That works... Ut oh... The Judge was told about our hooks... Ok... We will let some of our competitors who pay us thousands of dollars to access some of the code to find the "good hooks" in the API's... and take out what the Judge was told about... but not those he wasn't told about... Let's see. We can drop all support for Java and remove the JVM from our site... Oh no... we have to wait for that terrible Judge who says we are a monopoly to be overturned... Ok... Now let's do it... It's been 24 hours... we'll call it.... hmmm.... dot net... Geeezzzzz people. Does it take a bigger hammer to get through to some of you? I know it's thousands and thousands of pages... but if you can read court documents, it's all in there. Don't remember the details though. Hey, even IBM does it(FAST400?). Atleast they warn you that it may disable some software. -- Scott Johnson _______________________________________________ This is the PC Technical Discussion for iSeries Users (PcTech) mailing list To post a message email: PcTech@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/pctech or email: PcTech-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/pctech. --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.
