Thanks Alan.

Since this is two different code bases, I'm assuming that if you have Zend Server installed and running, that using the open source PHP server would not interfere with the Zend Server. This presumes you set up a second apache instance that points to the other CGI (as noted below)

Further question, an reason with the open source version of PHP why you could not have multiple instances of it running? I know Zend has always resisted having multiple copies of the Zend Server running and strongly suggested it was bad practice and would lead to unknown issues. That was OK, we just ran virtual web instances inside the one. I would be nice to break those apart, so if one needs a restart, we don't have to restart all of the web instances.

To answer Jim O.’s question about what to change in fastcgi.conf, King’s document is accurate:
CommandLine="/QOpenSys/pkgs/bin/php-cgi”

As shown above, you set the CommandLine parameter to the program you want to run, which in this case is our friendly RPM PHP binary.

Alan,

Willing to share the change needed in the fastcgi.conf file?

Thanks, Jon. Yes, as part of our PHP practice we are supporting and
migrating shops where open PHP RPMs are a good fit. ODBC is working
well. Load tests show excellent performance. We can also update the PHP
version pretty easily. One thing to watch out for—the standard RPM
doesn’t have all the extensions people may be using. We are building
them. Ldap, for example. I like the fact that the PHPRPMs are 64-bit, so
we don’t need to do the PASE 32-bit LDR_CNTRL shenanigans. About web
servers, Apache still works well with little or no changes. Just update
the fastcgi.conf file. Nginx also works.

Alan Seiden has already deployed this new version to a number of
clients and we'll be doing it soon. Not sure if Alan is on this list -
he may care to chime in if he is.

Thanks for this information. Quite interesting. So what's the

there already someone using it in a production environment in
