The apparent mess is healthy. If it's too clean, that's usually a sign
of sterility and lack of activity, especially in this day and age.
Sure, there comes a point when too much mess is counterproductive. But
I don't think we're there yet, and in any case, I have more confidence
that "too much mess" can self-correct (because people will simply
abandon the least useful or least promising avenues) than that "too
little activity" can jump-start itself.

If I'm frustrated with anything, it's with not having enough time to
devote to trying things out and contributing. I'm also slightly sad
that the writing appears to be on the wall for iSeriesPython, which
has been the Little Python That Could on the midrange platform for so
many years. As of this moment, I still consider it ahead of IBM's
Python for PASE, but eventually the compiled packages like NumPy will
be available on PASE, and there's no one with the interest, skill, and
time to do ILE C versions for iSeriesPython.
