I've decided to try Python. Our system admin was kind enough to create a cloud partition for me with all the OSS options installed. I'm off to a rough start though because I can't even get the ssh daemon to start.

Well, you got your SSH issue solved, but I think it's still worth
mentioning a couple of things, especially for other readers:

1. If you hadn't been able to get SSH working, you could still easily
get to Python using Qshell or QP2TERM from a green screen.

2. I don't know if you're trying Python for the first time ever, or
just for the first time on the i. If it's your first time ever, and
you hadn't been able to get it installed on the i, or you hadn't been
able to get it to work on the i for whatever reason, you could still
of course try it out on other platforms. One very productive way to
use Python and still leverage the IBM i is to have Python on another
machine and use it to connect to the i via ODBC.
