Hi Jim, > From Jim Damato > When we say that the AS/400 is going away we mean that we'll miss it's CL command set, operating environment, > database, and object architecture. When IBM talks about the future of the iSeries I don't get the feeling > that much of that environment will survive in the long haul. <UNSUPPORTEDOPINIONWARNING> I believe the base will stay about the same with new stuff added over, around, and below the status quo. We have probably seen the end of enhancements for the entire green screen genre except for advances in rpgle and sql, I agree, but I can't believe it will go away on any time scale important to me. ( I should live so long!:) > If you preserve the AS/400 by making it into something completely different, > have you really preserved it? That is what they are doing, I think, and it could get really cool, I just believe that all the current abilities will be supported - in that a cl/rpgle/whatever program compiled in 2000 will still run in 2010 in spite of the fact that in all other respects the machine and its standard interface will probably be unrecognizable. (And possibly more fun, but just as stable) ;) > I wonder if the S/390 has its own community of bigots out there shuddering > at the idea of a mainframe running Linux. Probably <g> I just think that they are getting worked up over nothing... Rick Rick DuVall Systems Manager Dealer's Auto Auction of Okc, Inc. Rick@daaokc.com <mailto:Rick@daaokc.com> (405) 947-2886
