MICROSOFT, DOJ REACH SETTLEMENT

Microsoft Corp. today agreed to a broad range of
restrictions--including a panel of full-time monitors with
full access to its code and its books--to settle antitrust
charges and end its long-running court battle with the
Department of Justice, the government announced. The
settlement, presented this morning to U.S. District Judge
Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, requires Microsoft to provide other
software developers with the interfaces to its middleware so
that competitors can develop products that will work
smoothly with the Windows operating system. To read the

GATES HOPEFUL STATES WILL 'SIGN ON'

The settlement reached between Microsoft and the Department
of Justice in the landmark antitrust case was fair and
reasonable, but would change the way the company had
traditionally done business and delivered software, Bill
Gates, Microsoft's chairman and chief software architect
told the media Friday morning. "We went the extra mile to
resolve this case and reach a settlement. This agreement
contains significant rules and regulations on how we develop
and license our software, but it allows Microsoft to keep
innovating on behalf of consumers," he said. Click here:

STATES WARY OF DOJ, MICROSOFT DEAL

The judge in the Microsoft Corp. anti-trust case pushed back
a key deadline to give state attorneys general more time to
mull a tentative agreement between the software maker and
the Department of Justice. The delay came one day after
proposed settlement terms were leaked to the press, sparking
criticism of the deal, especially among representatives of
the 18 states involved in the case, some of whom saw the
terms as far too lenient. To read the story, click here:

CALIFORNIA TO MICROSOFT: NOT SO FAST!

The likelihood of a quick, negotiated settlement that was
acceptable to all parties in the Microsoft antitrust case
was dealt a major blow on Thursday when California Attorney
General Bill Lockyer said he would continue to urge the 17
other states to take the review time they needed to fully
understand every word and every implication in the proposal
before they decided whether to settle. To read the story,
