Rob,

Two-cents worth here. Bob is a fork of VSC. That's good. RDi is built on top of Eclipse; so every time Eclipse changes we seem to have RDi issues. Maybe that will cease.

As a fork, that "should" mean that they grabbed it, extended it, and won't look back. It was a starting point; a foundation. Accept the existing plug-ins with a one-time load. Things like that.

As for the future - here is my hope. IBM abandons RDi as we know it today and ports it to Bob. Integrate it. Imbed it. Make Bob the IBM development environment of choice (VSC can be an alternative). Put everything that RDi does into Bob - then update/upgrade from there. Have all of what RDi does and all of what Bob is supposed to offer wrapped together. Then there's no more worries about Eclipse. Bob becomes the one, IBM supported and preferred, development IDE for the IBM i.

I am absolutely sure this will create, as usual on this platform, a divide of deeply entrenched individuals, on both sides, and maybe even a few moderates in the middle, with opinions - and that's good. That's what IBM should want - spirited feedback, opinions, even bias can be healthy.

Again, one lone voice in the wind here.

Steve

Subject: VSCode and Bob

Is this the list for such discussions? Or the WDSC list? Or is WDSC pretty much just for RDi?

What I am wondering about is if IBM Bob is not an add on to VSCode but basically an integrated package including VSCode is if the VSCode may lag behind. Compare this to RDi and how current it stays with levels of Eclipse.

Not an original thought on my part. Someone else asked me, so inquiring minds want to know.
