Why not just create an AIX (or Linux) partition and put just base
AIX/Linux on it.
1 - Because they're >2 hours away and the flash is only holding IBM i.
2 - When I get there next I don't want to sit around and wait for disk
initialization. I want to unplug, unrack and go.
3 - IDK jack... about AIX/VIOS and initializing disk.
I guess the real challenge would be to figure out how to load VIOS or AIX
from HMC and go.

Does this not too old document https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/booting-aix-maintenance-mode-using-hmc help?

There is an "Erase Disks" option in one of the available menus. Maybe you can access it and try it?

Maintenance

Type the number of your choice and press Enter.

1 Access a Root Volume Group
2 Copy a System Dump to Removable Media
3 Access Advanced Maintenance Functions
4 Erase Disks
5 Configure Network Disks (iSCSI)
6 Select Storage Adapters
