Not attempting to speak for anybody in the green screen-versus-browser
debate and the "very, very short learning curve" assertion: I note running
browser pages requires more software components and configuration than
green screen: if you're coding in SEU, you've confirmed the
communications. Anybody here remember CCP? Anybody here remember having
huge, bewildering, and tearing-your-hair-out frustrations with CCP? Yup--I
thought so. Smaller shops often do not have a resource for the usual
getting-started-and-I'm-doing-something-wrong questions, which then leads
to Midrange.com, emails to peers, and/or a tiresome search on Google.

There are a hard-to-conceive number of web page design tools--again, the
small shop won't have a resource for a brief Q&A. There's an assumption
threading through the executable code-writing community that web pages just
design themselves. Well, they don't, and designing good ones requires
somebody with an eye and some technical knowledge.

Yes, the learning curve can be short if you have a resource to answer
questions immediately, and if there's a wedge that splits good intentions
from giving up. it's the delay and frustration in getting a simple question
answered that kills desire. But the learning curve never looks that steep
when you're on the other side, along the lines of saying, "Oh, getting my
type rating on the Lear 45 was a breeze" to the fledgling pilot stressing
over their first solo.

It seems like there's a business/marketing/support opportunity for an
organization that wants to facilitate climbing the learning curve. Long
ago, there was one offering (and I've forgotten the developer's name)
providing step-by-step guidance but I don't recall seeing anything like
that recently.

This is a topic that generates lots of discussion but little action.
Green-screen users need a bridge and that bridge isn't knowledge, it's
pricey 3rd party tools (many of which do a pretty good job). I'm
continuing to look...

of the midrange.

I think his point is borne out by the apparent fact that there aren't many
new entrants to the IBM i market. Apparently. Is that wrong? If it is
correct, this platform will die off with us.

Good thing some of us are working on "look-alike" platforms.
