Hello Jon,

Never happened Patrick.

Sorry, but I was unclear. I was referring to C compilers. Not COBOL and certainly not RPG. I know there is an ancient IBM RPG compiler available in the MVS turnkey system, but I don't know if current z/OS includes RPG compilers.

RPG IV was derived from the SAA RPG compiler which was a rewrite in C of the RPG/400 compiler. It was also used in VARPG.

ILE COBOL was a brand-new, built-from-scratch compiler written in C. I wrote the design spec so I'm pretty sure about that <grin>.

Before doing that, we did attempt to see if the latest mainframe COBOL compiler (there were actually two different mainframe COBOL compilers) could be used as the base for ILECOBOL, but it wasn't possible.

Thanks! Interesting insight!

:wq! PoC
