Internal disks have specific part IDs and IBMi recognize between SSD and HDD. With external disks everything looks like HDDs.

Then, you can use the SSD affinity in your objects

Why should they care? With single-level store, how can software even tell whether a given persistent space is implemented as NVMe, disk, or old-fashioned ferrite cores?

(I've seen exhibits on core memory. I'd go blind, or insane, or both, trying to assemble that stuff by hand. Especially the ROM version.)
