Normally, a regular DNS query goes out via UDP. DNS Zone transfers, are usually done with TCP.

Zone transfers are normally used between DNS servers, not from clients.

Also, TCP is a valid way for client queries, also. DNS packets AFAIR are defined as being maximum 512 bytes in size. Anything larger — happening when using DNSSEC for cryptographically validating DNS responses — use either EDNS over UDP, or TCP.
