In classic C sockets API the functions to resolve names are different than "application sockets" calls.
Toy around with the NSLOOKUP command to check if the DNS resolution on the machine is twisted.
Or fire up PASE and abuse "dig".
DNS does have extension mechanisms to allow for big UDPs , but try with simple stuff first...
