That's a blast from the past. We used to do something similar - 30 years ago and more. O-Specs full of PCL escape sequences. We built forms galore that way.
At one point I used a PC-Based forms creation tool and redirected the print output to a file. Then, ran it through a conversion program that would output the O-Specs to embed in an RPG program. LaserJets and an IO-8200 twin-ax card in the printers expansion slot. Pretty sure we did this in the S/38 days too. I remember blowing up the compiler trying to do rounded corners on a form. That's a lot of dots!
Yeah, there a re a lot of better ways to do this. AFP makes it a piece of cake but, as you said, we're not in Juan's shop.
