Personally, I believe it to be a must have...

My first experience was with Aldon CMS back in 1996 or so. Purchased after
moving to the AS/400. I was basically the only developer.

We had purchased what amounted to an ERP application to run on it,
including the source.

Made life so much easier, paid for itself when the vendor shipped us a new
version of the Inventory module; as ACMS had a three way comparison
function.

Haven't been without source control (really CM) since.

Though my current employer uses Git and a home-grown deployer.

Many of us do NOT put source on production machines. Separating them into
different libraries is quite common.
