Rolling your own translation for a single doc to a single vendor is
doable...
But make sure you understand how it's to be transmitted. Back when I was
doing EDI, we were sending via a Value Added Network (VAN); originally
dial-up and then via the Internet.
I know there's been a few new internet specific communication protocols
defined, such as AS2.
It's possible your vendor uses SFTP or HTTPS directly, but if they want it
via AS2 or via VAN. You might need tooling.
Lastly, when you start getting into multiple documents, with multiple
versions, to multiple partners. Tooling helps.

I have been asked to create an EDI 834 file. I just started my researchyears
(google and vendor) and see that it could get complicated if I let it. I
am going to try not to let it get complicated. I do recall many many
ago co-workers using some tools to create them. At my current job we dolist
not have any tools, I don't expect any $ to get any tools.
Any recommendations on free tools (I don't expect this) or good
documentation on how to?
TIA
