I don't use a translator, I just get my data in from my files and write out
a flat file. Something like this:

line = 'ISA*00* *00* *'
+ %subst(CDSHTDESC:1:2)+'*'
+ %subst(esum.snd:1:15)+'*'
+ %subst(CDSHTDESC:3:2)+'*'
+ %subst(esum.rcv:1:15)+'*'
+ %subst(%char(%date():*ISO0):3:6)+'*'
+ %subst(%char(%time():*ISO0):1:4)+'*'
+ 'U*00401*'+ctlnumx+'*0*'
+ %subst(CDSHTDESC:5:1)+'*>~';

I remember spending a fortune on translators because the mappings were
going to change all the time and we will just let the translators do that.
I've never had to change anything like that in 30+ years. The other thing
was in old RPG we had to use move and movel. That would have been crazy.

Get your vendor to send you their EDI document as well as a TXT file that
they are expecting. Match it up with your data and send it off however you
want.

I have been asked to create an EDI 834 file. I just started my research
(google and vendor) and see that it could get complicated if I let it. I
am going to try not to let it get complicated. I do recall many many years
ago co-workers using some tools to create them. At my current job we do
not have any tools, I don't expect any $ to get any tools.

Any recommendations on free tools (I don't expect this) or good
documentation on how to?
TIA
