Yea, the font is an issue with Java. Proportional fonts don't do well.

To change the font (or any other display attributes) Use Edit, Preferences,
Appearance, Font. In the appearance menu you'll be able to modify quite a
bit more.

Now to save it as the default: (intuitive -- Not) Communication, then
"Save as Default Profile"
