This is an interesting topic. I work in both the z/OS world and IBMi with
my main strength being in z/OS. Both our main platform z/OS and IBMi are on
a sort of end of life with IBMi possibly ending earlier (maybe 4 years)
because the software we are using is going out of support and we have
migration plans to move to different applications. But as I started to work
on iBMi I found my z/OS experience especially in the areas of PowerVM
(PR/SM on the mainframe), virtual device adapters (VIOS) etc. very
helpful. And I took all the knowledge I had on SAN replication across to
IBMi which worked really well.

On the mainframe side with the majority of the code being in
COBOL/Assembler we are hiring grads to take over the mantle when our
experienced staff start to retire. But on the IBMi side we are relying on
a vendor and keep in house only some IBMi CL knowledge and some RPG. I
don't think there is any concerted effort to recruit IBMi people but maybe
we should?

Couple of thoughts on this:
My firm hired an intern who is now developing in RPGLE / SQL and working
with 2
senior IBM i developers.
I try and impart as much as I can from the operational / system admin side
to him
when the opportunity presents itself or when he asks questions.
