Hi Marc,
Thank you for taking the time and researching all this :)
I was looking for information about LAN console and 170 models, as I am
quite sure that, unfortunately, it does not apply. But, I have found the
original IBM documentation about Operations Console which applies to a
170. The book reference is SC41-5508.
You can read it a pretty applicable version (May 2000) here

I took the time to go through your emails, especially the last one you sent about the 2721 card and ops console cables, and I think I got some interesting info with your aid:
I definitely have a 2721 card on slot C08 (although it doesn't say 6A59), DSPHDWRSC says:
LIN01 2721-001 Operativo Adattatore comunicazio
CMN01 2721-001 Operativo Porta comunicazioni
CMN02 2721-001 Operativo Porta comunicazioni
Nome risorsa . . . . . . . . : CMN01
Testo . . . . . . . . . . . : Porta comunicazioni
Tipo-Modello . . . . . . . . : 2721-001
Numero seriale . . . . . . . : 53-8304072
Numero parte . . . . . . . . : 0000021H5386
Ubicazione fisica:
ID segmento 1
Posizione schede C08
Indirizzo logico
Bus SPD:
Bus di sistema 1
Scheda principale di sistem 0
Scheda di sistema 1
Comunicazioni:

Adattatore 1
So ideally I should be able to connect via Client Access using a 97H7557 operations console cable, connected to one of the 2 2721 ports.
All the pieces fit together, now I just need to find that cable :)
Thank you again!
