Two comments, friend Patrick:

1. True, and this proves the validity of Richard Stallman's thesis in
the *GNU Manifesto* that there exists an economic model for software
development outside the "rent it from me" model, the Free Software / Open
Source model. Stallman was right, and the 30+ year engagement between the
open source community and the finest business computing organization on the
planet proves that.
2. They don't do it *because* they are nice, but there are 2 ways to do
whatever one does in self-interest: One can do things *nicely* or one
can do things *otherwise*. IBM does what they must do in a very *nice*
manner, IMHO.
