Pete:

You used to be able to be able purchase firmware support separately from hardware maintenance, but you no longer can. (I’ve tried for several customers that went to third party maintenance). Also, software and hardware are separate so while I’m not surprised you were able to get IBM i and components licensed without an issue, hardware support is an entirely different matter.

Some of IBMs policies and pricing is causing IBM to loose quite a bit of business, even driving some customers from the platform for “perceived savings”. In quotes since it is really debatable if the savings are real, but then it does not matter if the perception is there.

Curious....do you have HWMA on the Power 8? The only way I could get a new UAK after it expired was to pay for HWMA, which is weird since the P9 is a Developer Discount box and they just renewed my SW keys no sweat.

If you were able to renew the UAK without HWMA, inquiring minds would like to know.....

Ok, I don't use HMC, so last time I had to update my UAK I had to go
through the whole rigamarole of hooking my PC up to my Power 8 via
Ethernet, setting the IP correctly (which took some testing) and then
uploading my new UAK after getting it from "my entitled ..." online.

So this time I did GO SERVICE option 20 and it said everything worked fine.

Update Access Key has been handled successfully.

But the date of expiration didn't change.

I did open a case with IBM in case something else is wrong, but I don't
understand what's going on and I don't want to have to go through the whole
process again of setting my PC IP, hooking up a long ethernet cable, etc...
etc.. blaah... haha. (yes, it's frustrating).
