In fact I am only curious. I have been working with java classes with RPG
and that works really well. It's just that the syntax to call your
prototyped function to invoke a java class method is obviously a bit
different, as you have to provide the call by passing the object
reference.. That takes me time when I have to train some folks at work.
It "would be nice" if at least for those cases you could just use the exact
syntax as in a pure java code, so that it could be more clear for most of
us.

My early experience and still at present is "C" programming. I learned RPG
and its evolution very quickly like 25 years ago and now most of my work is
with RPG and embedded SQL.
I remember when Microsoft released MS C V6.0, it was really interesting and
fun being able to embed assembler language in your C code. I used that a
lot in those MS-DOS days. I used to write my own assembler routines to
access the keyboard and even the disks! This is only to say that RPG, as
it goes pretty good and fun, could include some kind of embedding OO code
like java. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, it is already possible, just saying
it would be more elegant to write OO syntax at least with java.

How about start thinking of turning RPG into an OOL?

What's your perceived benefit? From your wording, it feels just like
"would be nice to have"?

From some articles in current German computer magazines, OO in general
seems to be less favored, lately. They speculate that OO promised too much
when it was new in the 1990s, while probably not holding up to those
promises. I'm not enough of a programmer to understand and evaluate the
details, though.
